We're still a long way from seeing the iPhone 14 in person, but rumours are starting to circulate. And, while the iPhone 13 is one of the best phones on the market today, as well as a premium product that anyone would be happy to own, that doesn't mean we can't get excited about the next upgrade.

The big news came from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman's Power On newsletter, which is a repository of Apple rumours and industry analysis. Gurman has previously made claims in it that have proven to be true, lending it some credibility. Looking ahead to 2022, Gurman made a number of predictions about the iPhone 14, AirPods Pro, MacBook Air, and Apple's shift to its own Apple Silicon chips.

According to Gurman, Apple will abandon the notch, which has been a feature of every model since the iPhone X, in favour of a radical (for Apple) hole-punch design that will look similar to some Huawei phones. Gurman is confirming rumours from the Korean publication The Elec and others.

While nothing is certain, and Apple's plans are subject to change, it would make sense for the iPhone 14 – the third generation under the new industrial design – to include a redesigned top section, among other high-end features. Perhaps the long-rumored under-display Touch ID will be included in the iPhone 14.

On top of that, expect improvements to the cameras, display (including the addition of 120Hz ProMotion to lower-end models), and other features. Apple is expected to release the iPhone 14 in September 2022.

But, well, the notch has been a constant companion for iPhone users for nearly a decade, so seeing it go would be a significant step back for the American tech giant.

WHAT ELSE FOR APPLE IN 2022?

Gurman also provided insight into what Apple will be doing in 2022. On the Mac side, this includes an Apple Silicon-powered Mac Pro with up to 40 CPU cores and 128 GPU cores; updated iMac and Mac mini models with Apple Silicon; and a refreshed Air.

There will almost certainly be a 5G iPhone SE, as well as three new Apple Watch models: SE, Series 8, and rugged, designed for sports enthusiasts.

Of course, we'll see iOS 16 (codenamed Sydney) and macOS 13 as well (codenamed Rome). As Apple continues to work on the OSes, features will most likely begin to trickle out in the coming months.
