Mac Studio could offer a pro-level Mac mini and I'd buy one in a heartbeat

The combination of Apple's most powerful chip inside its smallest computer and desktop professionals could be fantastic.

Just days before Apple's first event of 2022, there's talk of a brand new machine that could be unveiled in the coming months – though not on March 8. The rumored device, dubbed the Mac Studio, is said to be a Mac mini with the power of a Mac Pro. A new monitor could also bear the studio's name, making it the ideal complement to a new professional desktop setup.

The Mac Pro is a fantastic machine that can deliver up to 28-core processing, dual 64GB of Radeon Pro graphics, and 1.5TB of RAM. It also came with a price tag that ranged from a hefty $6k to an astronomical $52k for the fully-loaded version. Even the most advanced video editors will be able to find options that go far beyond what is available here.

While it would be naive to expect something the size of a Mac mini to compete with the Mac Pro, Apple could develop one to compete with the MacBook Pro. The latest 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models are equipped with the latest M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. The flagship model comes with a 10-core CPU, a 32-core GPU, and 32GB of RAM. It's an impressive spec, and as our MacBook Pro review shows, it has more power than most people require. In addition, we may see even more powerful M2 chips on MacBook Pro models in the coming weeks.

If this much power can fit into the slim form of the MacBook Pro, there's no reason it can't be matched by a small form desktop machine like the Mac mini. To account for the thermal systems and potentially larger fan, I expect the device to be slightly larger than the Mac mini, but it should still be small enough to fit beneath your monitor.

The first rumblings of this new device came from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman in his weekly email, but 9to5 Mac claims to have seen information indicating that the Mac Studio will be based on the Mac mini but will have a more powerful processor.

A powerful Mac Mini-type device makes much more sense for those who don't require the portability of a laptop. Why spend money on a 16-inch screen if you're going to plug it into an external monitor all the time?

I unplug my MacBook Pro from its dock on my desk so infrequently that I'm pretty sure I've forgotten what it's like to use the screen and keyboard on their own. While I've resisted the Mac mini thus far, I'd be tempted to upgrade to something with the same power as a new MacBook Pro.

So, selfishly, I'm hoping the rumors are true. The Mac Studio, paired with a matching Mac Studio monitor, sounds like my ideal new machine. My credit card, on the other hand, maybe concerned.
