The Nintendo Switch was released in 2017, and despite initial scepticism, it has since become one of the most popular handheld systems.

According to official data from the company's most recent earnings call, the Nintendo Switch has sold over 100 million copies. With this, the Switch joins an exclusive list of the most popular gaming consoles of all time, which includes Sony and Nintendo's own entries. The console is expected to reach 100 million units sometime in December 2021, with the most recent quarter accounting for approximately 24 million units.

According to company data, the Nintendo Switch's normal version is still the most popular of the whole Switch portfolio, accounting for approximately 80% of all Switch devices ever sold. The Switch Lite and Switch OLED, the two most current models, have sold a total of 21.86 million Switch units, out of a total of 103.54 million Switch units sold to date. Nintendo's Game Boy line was the first to reach the stratospheric 100 million mark in terms of the most popular gaming consoles of all time. The Nintendo Game Boy was released in 1989 and has reportedly sold over 119 million copies worldwide. Sony's first-generation PlayStation was the first console to reach this milestone, with an estimated 103 million copies sold. The PlayStation 2 is the best-selling gaming system of all time, and it is also the only game console to sell more than 150 million units over its lifetime.
The Nintendo DS family of consoles has surpassed the 150 million mark in terms of total units sold across its various models. These sales data, however, are spread across the whole Nintendo DS portfolio, therefore it is not counted as a single console model that reached the high sales threshold. The Switch's closest competitor in the handheld consoles category is the Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP), which has sold an estimated 82 million units in its lifetime. Despite the fact that Sony's PlayStations continue to dominate the home console market, the Nintendo Switch sales milestone underlines Nintendo's sustained dominance in the handheld gaming area. Among the other noteworthy console manufacturers, Microsoft's Xbox 360 is the best-selling gaming system to date, having sold an estimated 84 million copies throughout its lifetime. Sony's PS5 appears to have sold 17.3 million units so far, while Microsoft's Xbox Series X and S line appears to have sold roughly 12 million. Both have been hindered by component supply problems throughout the world.
