Thor: Love and Thunder Release Date

Thor: Love and Thunder will be released on July 8, 2022. Filming on the film has concluded, and Chris Hemsworth confirmed the news on Instagram with a behind-the-scenes set photo.

The journey to this point had been long and winding, perhaps best told over a few mugs of mead in one of Midgard's many inns. With no tankards in sight, you'll have to settle for this recap – and hope Ragnarok doesn't reach us by the end. Ready? Take a deep breath.

Thor 4 was supposed to arrive on November 5, 2021, at the end of Marvel Phase 4. That was revealed during Kevin Feige's avalanche of Marvel Cinematic Universe news at SDCC 2019. Things began to shift after that. With Black Widow delayed as part of Marvel's wave of coronavirus delays, Thor: Love and Thunder were pushed back to February 18. That is until it was pushed forward to March 25, 2022, due in part to the change in the release date of Spider-Man: No Way Home. It was pushed back to May 6, 2022, in December 2020, before a further reshuffle of the Marvel release calendar pushed it back (hopefully for the last time) to July 8.

Thor: Love and Thunder cast

First, let's look at the confirmed Thor: Love and Thunder cast. It comes as no surprise who is in the spotlight. Yep. Chris Hemsworth reprises his role as Thor, the God of Thunder. Valkyrie, the newly installed ruler of New Asgard, joins him (Tessa Thompson). However, fans of Loki will be disappointed to learn that Tom Hiddleston will not be reprising his role.

Natalie Portman appeared on stage as a surprise at SDCC 2019. She was announced to be returning to the MCU as Jane Foster, but not just Jane Foster. This Jane Foster – whether she comes from a multiverse or not – will be The Mighty Thor, a plot point lifted directly from Jason Aaron's legendary mid-2010s Thor run. Portman has also recently revealed that her character will be treated for cancer. Check out what the comics have to say about Natalie Portman's Mighty Thor if you need a refresher.

Russell Crowe has joined the cast of the film and revealed that he will play Zeus – so we can probably expect a lot of lightning if the two thunder gods collide.

Jaimie Alexander returns as Sif, and more MCU characters, including Matt Damon reprising his role from Thor: Ragnarok, could be on the way. The actor took on the role of Loki on Asgard. Sam Neil, who played Odin in the same play, has also hinted at a possible appearance.

Taika Waititi, who directed the film, will also reprise his role as Korg. The rock star will make his third appearance in Avengers: Endgame, following his debut in Thor: Ragnarok and a Fortnite-inspired cameo against noobmaster69 in Thor: Ragnarok.

Chris Pratt, who plays Star-Lord, also appears in the new Thor film. It's unclear how much of a role he'll play, but we now have confirmation that the Asgardians of the Galaxy will ride again.

Thor: Love and Thunder Storyline

Thor: Love and Thunder is an upcoming American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, based on the Marvel Comics character Thor. It's the direct sequel to Thor: Ragnarok and the 29th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

What can we expect from Thor: Ragnarok? The Hollywood Reporter predicts that it will have an "Avengers 5 feel." Chris Hemsworth even described it as "one of the best scripts he's read in years." Accurate? If director Taika Waititi is to be believed, Ragnarok will be dialled up to eleven.

"If you take Ragnarok – which I feel was a very big, outlandish, bombastic film – we're trying to double down on everything we did with that and create something that's more crazy, more fun, and even more of a big, big adventure," he told Entertainment Tonight.

The director has also stated that the film "might be the best Marvel film ever," which are bold statements.

Waititi also spoke with The Sydney Morning Herald about the film and hinted that there might not be a Thor 5: The Dark World sequel. "I think this is going to be funnier," he speculated. "We simply multiplied everything we did with Ragnarok. Who knows if we do another one after this, but I definitely feel like we put everything into this film – every idea and every single ridiculous concept, gag, stunt, or character. I couldn't be more pleased." Later, he hinted that the film is the "What I wanted to do from the beginning was to ask: 'What are people expecting the least from this franchise?'" he says to Wired. Oh, I see – a full-fledged love story!"

Waititi also confirmed in an Instagram Live video that Korg will be looking for love in Thor 4 and that Space Sharks will appear. That is not a typo. During the Thor comic series in 2013, the creatures appeared in the comics and served as a razor-sharp roadblock for those attempting to get close to the villainous Gorr's planet.

We also know Jane Foster's Thor will play a role, though nothing has been revealed about how she obtains her own version of Mjolnir or what universe she comes from.

Another plot point will be Valkyrie's search for a partner to rule New Asgard with. "She's the king. "If she can't find her queen, she'll be king and queen at the same time," Thompson explained to ET.

Anything else is, for the time being, pure conjecture. But, as they say, you have to speculate to accumulate, and given how closely Love and Thunder appear to be following certain plot points from Jason Aaron's run on Mighty Thor, it's worth taking a look at what's still to come.

File this under "hopes" rather than "facts," but Jane Foster's return likely means a few things. One, Thor is no longer deserving of the hammer. Nobody knows how that happens, though Jane did pick up Mjolnir on the moon in the comics and may do so again here. Another possibility is that she is from a multiverse, which is explicitly mentioned in the Doctor Strange sequel Multiverse of Madness.

Thor: Love and Thunder Plot

Yes, as revealed at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con, Jane Foster has been cast as the new Thor, at least for this film. In the comics, this has happened twice, once in 1978 and once in 2014, when she was deemed worthy of carrying Mjolnir after Thor was no longer able to do so.

We also know that Valykrie, who ascended to the throne of Asgard in Avengers: Endgame, is on the hunt for a queen. Yes, you read that correctly: Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie will now be canonically queer, mirroring her comic-book counterpart.

So, who will be that queen? There are no details to share here, but there is a lot of hope among fans online that Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, will get the title.

Thor: Love and Thunder Trailer: Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada

Thor: Love and Thunder's first trailer, which is available in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada, teases only what we already know about the film. Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth, briefly joins forces with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Jane Foster, played by Natalie Portman, will wield Mjolnir and become the Mighty Thor. Russell Crowe appears briefly as Zeus, the Olympian king. And director Taika Waititi will once again use nostalgic rock hits to drive his film, with the first Thor: Love and Thunder trailer featuring Guns N' Roses' forever hit "Sweet Child o' Mine." Waititi appears to have been unleashed, as he was in Thor: Ragnarok.

Along with the trailer, the first Thor: Love and Thunder poster has been revealed. (At the end of the story, you can see it.) With two Marvel Cinematic Universe films coming out in less than two months, Marvel has had to start marketing for the second one while the first, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, is still a few weeks away.

"These hands were once used for battle, now they're just humble tools for peace," Thor (Hemsworth) says at the beginning of the Thor: Love and Thunder teaser trailer, as we see Thor transform from a child to an adult as he sprints. Thor buries his Strombreaker axe in the present day, signalling his retirement. "I need to figure out who exactly I am," he says as we see him meditate. The Thor: Love and Thunder trailer kicks into high gear as the Guns N' Roses song begins to play. We see the Big Lebowski Thor — from Avengers: Endgame — training to lose that belly, before declaring that he "wants to choose his own path," which is intercut with Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) rolling his eyes.

What follows is a sort of montage set to "Sweet Child o' Mine," with Thor and his friend Korg (Waititi) being left behind by the Guardians of the Galaxy, a swarm of superpowered magical goats pulling a floating ship — this is actually from Marvel Comics, believe it or not — Thor passionately kissing a blue-haired woman, and a brief look at Zeus' (Crowe) back as he catches I'm guessing he's one of the gods killed by Thor: Love and Thunder villain Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who isn't shown in the first trailer.

"Remember what I told you," Star-Lord says in the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer. "Have you ever felt lost?" We see King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), who appears to be bored out of her mind as the ruler of New Asgard. "Just look into the eyes of the people you care about," Star-Lord then continues as we enter the scene where this is actually taking place. Thor tries to make eye contact with Star-Lord, who avoids him and says, "Not me." It's obviously meant to be a comedic moment, as Thor tries to deflect the remark: "What? "I'm just listening."

After the Thor: Love and Thunder title card animation, we see a reforged Mjolnir fly into a woman's eyes. Thor appears stunned — and the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer try to keep some mystery for those who haven't been following the news at all — but we all know who it is under there. It's something I've already mentioned. Thor's ex-girlfriend, astrophysicist Jane Foster (Portman), transforms into the Mighty Thor while undergoing cancer treatment. The comics have done a good job of explaining how she gains her powers and what happens next, but Marvel has rarely adapted the illustrated pages straight to screen. There will be changes to her story; we just have to wait and see what they are.

Thor: Love and Thunder will be released in cinemas worldwide on July 8th. Thor: Love and Thunder, like the first trailer, will be released in English, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam in India.
