Early Life and Career
Johnson was born on May 2, 1972, in Hayward, California. Johnson grew up watching his father, professional wrestler Peter "High Chief" Fanene Maivia, and grandson, wrestler Rocky Johnson, compete in the ring. Johnson, who had no intention of following in his father's footsteps, attended the University of Miami and showed promise with his stature and agility until he was halted by injuries.
Becoming 'The Rock'
With limited professional football chances, Johnson resorted to wrestling, making his WWE debut in Texas against the Brooklyn Brawler. After a few more matches, including a tag team victory with Bart Sawyer, the WWE signed him as Flex Kavana. A year later, he joined The Nation of Domination, eventually rising to become its leader and acquiring the moniker The Rock.
He eventually joined The Corporation, a group of skilled wrestlers, and began an infamous feud with Steve Austin. The Rock, often known as "The People's Champ," went on to win a total of 17 WWE championships during his illustrious career.
