STORY: Hawkins' goofy teenagers are once again in the grip of darkness as mysterious incidents continue to rock the once sleepy town. How far will this disturbing trend of heinous murders and foreboding threats go?

REVIEW: Nothing should come as a surprise for a series that thrives on legacy, such as 'Stranger Things.' It's no surprise, then, that the Duffer brothers go all out this time, giving fans seven supersized episodes in volume 1 of season 4, leaving only two to be streamed in July. But, before we go any further, we should warn you that entering the fourth season with little or no memory of the previous instalments will not be beneficial.

To enjoy and even comprehend the events of this massive season, one must be a true fan of all the upside-down craziness that has made historic strides since its Netflix debut in 2016. It all began with the disappearance of a young boy in a small town, which unleashed a terrifying reign of supernatural forces and introduced them to a strange little girl known as Jane Hopper aka Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown).

Jane's story takes a back seat in its latest season – the bravest, darkest, and most complex yet – to so much else and so many others who occupy the screen space. That may be by design, but one cannot help but miss the simplicity of its earlier seasons when a group of nerdy boys went about investigating mysterious happenings in their town and Jane's superpowers took centre stage. The boys have reached that awkward age and appearance. Jane has lost her abilities, but the show is at its best when it's just the two of them on screen.

'Stranger Things 4' goes places and has unexpected plot twists in the spirit of being bigger and better. There are a plethora of tracks running concurrently, which is ideal for bingeing with undivided attention. However, if too many characters and plots overwhelm you, this season may be frustratingly overstuffed.

Throughout the show, the mysteriously groovy background score keeps us company with familiar faces, characters, and the perfectly recreated 1980's vintage life. Jane is at her most vulnerable at this point, having been bullied and bruised at high school and at the lab where Dr. Brenner (Matthew Modine) is up to more nefarious deeds. This keeps our hopes alive that Eleven will return to action.

Joyce (Winona Ryder) gets to leave Hawkins and kick some buttocks with Murray (Brett Gelman), who are on a mission to save Jim (David Harbour). In a story with so many moving parts, Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), and Steve (Joe Keery) have their fair share of adventures.

Finally, it all comes down to the volume 1 finale (if you can call it that) when all the high-tension horror reaches a fever pitch, leaving us eagerly anticipating what comes next. While the jury is still out on how much is too much, there is no such thing as too long for fans of this strange franchise.

Stranger Things Season 4 Release Date

The COVID-19 shutdown undoubtedly had an impact on Netflix's original plan. Filming began in January 2020 and lasted only a few months before production on the new season was halted due to the pandemic, and filming did not resume until October 2020. Stranger Things was supposed to film for seven months, from January to August 2020, but even then, the post-production schedule is lengthy.

Stranger Things Season 4 Volume One will premiere on May 27, 2022, with Episodes 1 through 7, and Volume Two will premiere on July 1, 2022, with Episodes 8 and 9. The Duffer Brothers have also revealed that while every episode in the fourth season is long, Episodes 7, 8, and 9 are feature-length films.

Stranger Things Season 4 Cast

Stranger Things 4 will feature the return of the entire main cast from Stranger Things 3, including Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Noah Schnapp, Caleb McLaughlin, Sadie Sink, Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, and Maya Hawke.

In addition, for Stranger Things Season 4, Priah Ferguson, Cara Buono, and Brett Gelman have been promoted to series regulars. The second teaser trailer also confirms Matthew Modine's return as Martin Brenner in the upcoming season.

As series regulars, Jamie Campbell Bower, Eduardo Franco, and Joseph Quinn join Robert Englund, Tom Wlaschiha, Nikola Duriko, Joel Stoffer, Sherman Augustus, Mason Dye, Tyner Rushing, and Joe Chrest, Amybeth McNulty, Myles Truitt, Regina Ting Chen, and Grace Van Dien.

Stranger Things Season 4 Trailer

The first Stranger Things Season 4 trailer was released to commemorate the start of filming on February 14, 2020. It's a brief teaser with only footage of David Harbour's Hopper, but it's better than nothing. Then, on May 6, 2021, another teaser was released, transporting us back to the Rainbow Room and implying that more of Eleven's origin story would be told in Season 4. We got another sneak peek at the new season on August 6, 2021, with much more new footage mixed in with footage from previous seasons.

On September 25, 2021, we got a short featurette about the ominous Creel House that the kids explore, as well as information about the family who once lived there. Finally, on November 6, 2021, we get a full trailer, which shows Eleven writing a letter to Mike about her new life in California, how she's adjusting, but also how excited she is to see him again for Spring Break. After that, another trailer was released, this time on April 12, 2022.
