WhatsApp update

You've probably heard of WhatsApp. The Meta-owned chat app is the most popular communication tool for much of the world, and new features are constantly being added.

We have a pretty good idea of what to expect from one of the best chat apps in the coming months thanks to the folks over at WABetaInfo, who regularly break down beta WhatsApp releases to discover upcoming features.

Today, we're going to go over five upcoming features that piqued our interest and will make WhatsApp a better tool. While Meta may be in trouble, WhatsApp is only getting stronger.

1. MESSAGE REACTIONS

One of the best features of iMessage, Messenger, Discord, Slack, and pretty much every other messaging app out there is the ability to quickly respond to a message without having to send a message.

WhatsApp does not currently support message reactions for some reason (we're sure it's a good one), but this appears to be changing in the near future.

Reactions were discovered in a WhatsApp beta in September 2021, which piqued our interest. We can't wait to quickly respond with an emoji in the group chat.

2. BETTER TWO-STEP VERIFICATION

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is testing improvements to the service's management of two-step verification, which can't come soon enough.

According to a January beta, WhatsApp will allow users to set and change pins to add an extra layer of security to the app.

Unfortunately, the feature isn't yet available, so keep an eye out for it.

3. COMMUNITIES

WhatsApp is currently testing a new feature called Communities.

Communities, first spotted in WhatsApp code, appears to be an expanded group chat feature, possibly with people outside of a contact list. Administrators, for example, will be able to specify specific topics.

We're excited about Communities because it provides a secure alternative to Facebook Groups and other tools for mass communication. Consider Discord but on WhatsApp.

4. VOICE CALL WALLPAPERS

According to a January beta, WhatsApp is working on adding wallpapers for voice calls, which will be a nice touch that will make the app more vibrant.

Other minor changes have been made to improve the UI of the voice calling page, which we appreciate.

However, it is unclear when WhatsApp intends to roll out this feature.

5. ANIMATED HEART EMOJI

Finally, from WhatsApp beta 2.22.72, we have an interesting feature: animated heart emoji.

The feature has been in development for some time, but it appears to be nearing completion. It's a little strange that WhatsApp doesn't already have this feature, but better late than never, in our opinion.

Hopefully, one day, WhatsApp will have a plethora of animated emoji to choose from.
